{"id":1839,"date":"2025-10-21T17:13:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T17:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lw-sda.org\/?p=1839"},"modified":"2025-10-21T17:13:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T17:13:15","slug":"sermon-notes-but-speak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lw-sda.org\/index.php\/2025\/10\/21\/sermon-notes-but-speak\/","title":{"rendered":"Sermon Notes \u2014 \u201cBut Speak\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) Big Idea<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>God calls us to\u00a0<strong>speak<\/strong>, not from mere self-control, but from hearts\u00a0<strong>transformed by the Spirit<\/strong>\u2014so our words impart grace and draw people to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) Primary Scriptures<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Acts 18:1\u201317<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Paul in Corinth; Justus\u2019s house; conversions of\u00a0<strong>Crispus<\/strong>\u00a0and later\u00a0<strong>Sosthenes<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Gallio\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0judgment seat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Acts 18:9\u201310<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 The Lord to Paul: \u201cDo not be afraid;\u00a0<strong>keep on speaking<\/strong>\u2026 I am with you.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Proverbs 25:11<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 \u201cA word fitly spoken\u2026\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ephesians 4:29<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Speech that\u00a0<strong>builds up<\/strong>\u00a0and gives grace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Luke 6:45<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Words flow from the\u00a0<strong>abundance of the heart<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2 Corinthians 3:18<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<strong>Beholding<\/strong>\u00a0the Lord, we are\u00a0<strong>transformed<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Romans 12:2<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<strong>Be transformed<\/strong>\u00a0by the renewing of your mind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3) Core Movements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Presence &amp; Proclamation:<\/strong>\u00a0Paul reasons in the synagogue, then continues\u00a0<strong>next door<\/strong>\u00a0at Justus\u2019s house\u2014faithful presence leads to unexpected fruit (<strong>Crispus<\/strong>, then\u00a0<strong>Sosthenes<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Promise for Witnesses:<\/strong>\u00a0Jesus strengthens a weary preacher:\u00a0<strong>\u201cDo not fear; speak\u2014I am with you.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transformation vs. Self-Control:<\/strong>\u00a0Stoic restraint can\u00a0<strong>manage behavior<\/strong>; only\u00a0<strong>Christ<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>Spirit<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>renew the heart<\/strong>, shaping speech that gives grace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4) Illustrative\/Context Notes <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stoicism &amp; Seneca:<\/strong>\u00a0prized rational restraint and polished speech; \u201cspeech is the mirror of the mind.\u201d Helpful, but\u00a0<strong>insufficient<\/strong>\u00a0for heart renewal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gallio (Acts 18)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 proconsul (and Seneca\u2019s brother) models detached judgment; yet the\u00a0<strong>gospel<\/strong>\u2014not philosophy\u2014changes communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social witness:<\/strong>\u00a0Next-door church (Justus) + gracious conduct influences even synagogue leaders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Modern parallel:<\/strong>\u00a0Our\u00a0<strong>social media<\/strong>\u00a0is a microphone\u2014let it mirror\u00a0<strong>Christ\u2019s grace<\/strong>, not outrage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5) Our Message <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When Jesus says, \u201cDo not be afraid;\u00a0<strong>keep on speaking<\/strong>,\u201d what\u00a0<strong>good news<\/strong>\u00a0about Him should be most audible in your context this week (work, home, online)?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If someone only read your last 10 posts\/texts, what\u00a0<strong>gospel<\/strong>\u00a0would they infer you believe (about God, people, hope, enemies, justice, grace)?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paul shifted from the synagogue to a house\u00a0<strong>next door<\/strong>. Where might God be inviting you to move your message\u00a0<strong>one door closer<\/strong>\u2014from church walls to everyday spaces?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can you present Jesus to people who\u00a0<strong>don\u2019t share your background<\/strong>\u00a0(as Paul did with Gentiles)\u2014what starting points (creation, love, justice, meaning) connect best?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In seasons of resistance (\u201cyour blood be on your own heads\u201d), how do you discern when to\u00a0<strong>persist<\/strong>, when to\u00a0<strong>pivot<\/strong>, and how to\u00a0<strong>leave a blessing<\/strong>\u00a0behind?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6) Our Conduct <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which recent conversation of yours\u00a0<strong>imparted grace<\/strong>\u00a0(Eph. 4:29)? Which did the opposite? What made the difference\u2014tone, timing, truth, tenderness?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Justus\u2019s proximity and\u00a0<strong>good neighborliness<\/strong>\u00a0opened doors for Crispus. What\u00a0<strong>neighbor habits<\/strong>\u00a0(parking, noise, kindness, invitations) preach before your words do?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When criticized or misunderstood, do you default to\u00a0<strong>Stoic suppression<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Spirit-led transformation<\/strong>? What responses reveal what\u2019s truly in your heart (Luke 6:45)?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where might a careless comment have wounded someone (immigration, politics, culture)? What does genuine\u00a0<strong>repair<\/strong>\u00a0look like: confession, listening, restitution, new practice?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your speech is a \u201c<strong>mirror of the heart<\/strong>,\u201d what heart-level desires (approval, control, resentment) is God inviting you to surrender so your words become healing?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7) Practical Application <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Daily \u201cBehold &amp; Bless\u201d (10 minutes):<\/strong>\u00a0Read one gospel scene; ask the Spirit to\u00a0<strong>form Christ\u2019s heart<\/strong>\u00a0in you; send one\u00a0<strong>blessing message<\/strong>\u00a0(text\/post\/note) that builds up someone specifically.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rule of Speech (weeklong):<\/strong>\u00a0Before posting\/speaking, ask:\u00a0<strong>True? Necessary? Gracious? Timely?<\/strong>\u00a0If any \u201cno,\u201d\u00a0<strong>rewrite<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>refrain<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Next-Door Mission:<\/strong>\u00a0Identify your \u201c<strong>Justus\u2019s house<\/strong>\u201d space (porch, break room, Zoom, cafeteria). Plan one\u00a0<strong>gentle spiritual conversation<\/strong>\u00a0or invitation this week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Repair &amp; Reconcile:<\/strong>\u00a0If the Spirit brings to mind a hurtful word,\u00a0<strong>own it<\/strong>\u00a0by name,\u00a0<strong>apologize<\/strong>, and ask, \u201cHow can I make this right?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Testimony Card (2 minutes):<\/strong>\u00a0Prepare a 3-sentence story:\u00a0<em>Before Christ\u2026<\/em>\u00a0\/\u00a0<em>Jesus met me when\u2026<\/em>\u00a0\/\u00a0<em>Now He\u2019s teaching me to\u2026<\/em>\u00a0Use it when God opens a door.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social Media Tithe:<\/strong>\u00a0Dedicate\u00a0<strong>10%<\/strong>\u00a0of your posts to\u00a0<strong>explicit witness<\/strong>\u00a0(Scripture, answered prayer, service highlight, invitation),\u00a0<strong>0%<\/strong>\u00a0to contempt.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8) Personal Commitment <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Where am I\u00a0<strong>silent<\/strong>\u00a0out of fear, and what precise promise of Jesus (Acts 18:9\u201310) will I carry into that space?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do I want the\u00a0<strong>appearance<\/strong>\u00a0of holiness (self-control) more than the\u00a0<strong>presence<\/strong>\u00a0of Christ (transformation)? What practice of\u00a0<strong>beholding<\/strong>\u00a0will I guard daily?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whose name comes to mind as my \u201c<strong>many in this city<\/strong>\u201d (Acts 18:10)? Will I pray for them by name and take\u00a0<strong>one step<\/strong>\u00a0toward them this week?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What topic triggers ungracious speech in me (politics, family, lifestyle)? What\u00a0<strong>Spirit-led limit<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>accountability<\/strong>will I embrace?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What sentence will I choose as my\u00a0<strong>signature sentence<\/strong>\u00a0this week that others will hear\/see from me? (e.g., \u201cJesus has been kind to me\u2014how can I pray for you?\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9) For Further Study<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Read\u00a0<strong>Acts 18<\/strong>\u00a0alongside\u00a0<strong>1\u20132 Corinthians<\/strong>\u00a0to trace how Corinth\u2019s beginnings shaped Paul\u2019s counsel on speech, love, and edification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contrast\u00a0<strong>Stoic moralism<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0<strong>New-Covenant transformation<\/strong>: Romans 7\u20138; 2 Corinthians 3; Galatians 5:16\u201326; James 3 (the tongue).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meditate on\u00a0<strong>Proverbs<\/strong>\u00a0about words: 10:19; 12:18; 15:1\u20134; 18:21; 25:11.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10) Prayer Points<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Boldness with Presence:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cLord Jesus, as you told Paul, tell us: \u2018Do not be afraid; keep speaking.\u2019 Fill us with\u00a0<strong>courage and love<\/strong>\u00a0for the people right next door.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transformation within:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cHoly Spirit, move us from\u00a0<strong>managed behavior<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>renewed hearts<\/strong>. As we behold Jesus,\u00a0<strong>transform<\/strong>\u00a0our desires and purify our words.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grace-giving Speech:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cFather, set a\u00a0<strong>guard over our lips<\/strong>.
