The Greatest Servant

Scripture Reference: Matthew 20:25–26

Speaker: Pastor Jeff Kern

1.

Main Points

  • The desire for power and control is a strong motivator in our world.
  • True leadership in God’s kingdom is modeled by servanthood, not authority.
  • Jesus redefines greatness through humility and service, not hierarchy.

2.

Key Scripture

Matthew 20:25–26 (NKJV)

“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.”

3.

Supporting Illustrations

  • Historical figures like Roy Cohn and Julius Caesar were driven by a desire for power.
  • The disciples’ request (through their mother) to sit beside Jesus reflects worldly ambition.
  • Jesus’ ultimate act of servanthood—washing the disciples’ feet—teaches that true greatness comes through humility.

4.

Our Message: Reflective Questions

  • In what ways have I sought recognition or authority over others, rather than serving them?
  • How does Jesus’ model of leadership challenge my understanding of success and influence?
  • Am I drawn more to titles and roles, or to the opportunities those roles provide to serve?

5.

Our Conduct: Reflective Questions

  • How can I intentionally lower myself to uplift others in my church, family, or community?
  • What does it mean to lead from a place of spiritual influence rather than positional power?
  • How do I respond when others are given roles or recognition I hoped for?

6.

Practical Application

  • Identify one area in church or community where I can serve quietly and faithfully this week.
  • Reject the world’s model of leadership by embracing humility, especially in conflict or competition.
  • Practice spiritual disciplines that keep my heart aligned with Christ’s servant nature.

7.

Personal Commitment

  • Will I commit to serving even when no one sees or applauds?
  • Can I commit to being a vessel through whom Christ’s love and humility are shown to others?
  • Am I willing to let go of ambition in order to be available for God’s mission?

8.

Prayer Points

  1. For a servant’s heart: “Lord, strip away my pride and replace it with the humility of Christ.”
  2. For wisdom in leadership: “Help me lead with love, patience, and sacrifice, reflecting Your example.”
  3. For church unity: “Unite us in service, not position, that we may reflect Your kingdom on earth.”
